Can You Hear Me Daddy?
By Y.Y. Chan & Illustrated by Pearly L
It is not easy to talk to your kids about the difficult and uncomfortable topics of death, loss and grief. Hopefully, with this book, readers can be uplifted and learn about how faith in Christ can bring us peace and comfort, knowing that death is not the end, but the beginning of an eternity with our Father in Heaven. Can You Hear Me, Daddy? Renee keeps a diary after she finds out her daddy is sick with cancer. She even starts praying and asking God to make him better. But, what if he doesn’t get any better? She is worried that she won’t be able to talk to her daddy after he has gone, but her daddy encourages her to keep talking to him, no matter what.
I’m at a loss for words. This picture book brought me to tears. It was written with such raw emotion, and such a wonderful way to explain to children about death and loss. As adults we have a hard time dealing with death, even knowing it’s inevitable. A child just doesn’t understand why they aren’t able to see someone they love any longer. As a firm believer in God, I believe that there is life after death in heaven. The way she explained that even though the child prayed for the Daddy to get better, that God knew what was best. Sometimes people question or even lose their faith when death takes a loved one, so trying to understand that when God calls you home it’s time. This is a beautiful heart-felt book that everyone should have in their home for when their children experience loss. Thank you Y.Y. Chan for gifting my family this book, it’s been an honor.
