After a painful break-up in university, Bethany Clarke has sworn off love to focus on her career. From her humble South Side beginnings to her position as an architect intern at a prestigious Chicago firm, she’s proven to be a hard worker and is proud of her accomplishments. In three years, she’ll be a fully licensed architect which is more important to her than anything else.

Confirmed bachelor Nicholas Grey is more than the playboy perpetrated by the tabloids. Now his position as CEO of the architecture firm Grey & Company is on the line, and his mother’s interference is making things more difficult. Nick’s committed to his work, but, in order to be taken seriously, he needs to land a huge project. A stable personal life will help guarantee the contract.

Fairy Godmother Faye Delmore hears Nick’s plea and steps in to help. Posing as a publicist, she suggests a strategy to polish his public image, which includes convincing Beth to play his wife. Faye knows Nick needs the huge project to save his job, but she also knows he needs Beth in his life.

What happens when you add a fairy godmother who loves playing matchmaker into the equation? A future designed by destiny.

Research, Writer’s Block, and Mood Boards

I like using visuals when I’m writing. I save images for my characters, maps of cities, blueprints of buildings, schedules for public transit, outfits, and, in the case of Designed by Destiny, even a screenshot from Google Earth. I like to be as accurate as possible. When I’m in the middle of a book, my search history is… interesting… I enjoy learning new things. I’m one of those authors who’ll spend hours learning about laundry in the 1940s for just one sentence. And I’m super grateful that it no longer takes 19 hours to wash clothes. With two boys, I do a lot of laundry.

I base my books in Chicago, Illinois. And, the funny thing is, I’ve never been to Chicago. I just love the city, its iconic neighborhoods, its rich history, how they call their transit system the “L.” My fascination with Chicago began early. When I was younger, I even wanted to attend Northwestern University. All my books, beginning with my second full-length novel, take place (at least in part) in Chicago. So, thorough research is a must. I’ve never been there, but I want my readers to feel as if they have.

Research is great, but it’s easy to get side-tracked. One search leads to another and suddenly you’re perusing menus for wedding receptions. And getting hungry. After one particular research jaunt, I had all the information at hand for my main characters to attend a charity gala except I was too exhausted to write the scene. It wasn’t writer’s block, per se, but writing was definitely not happening. I opened a tab for Canva, this amazing design website / app, and made a mood board. This was actually the first mood board I ever made. The closest I’d come before was making a Pinterest board. Designing a mood board got the creative juices flowing again, and I wrote my scene.

I’d always visualized my story as I wrote, letting it play out in my mind like a movie. But, over the past few years, due to a health condition, my brain isn’t operating the same way. I had to leave my pantster ways behind and learn how to properly plot (which could be an entire blog post on its own). Saving images during my research process has helped tremendously. I can, once again, “see” where my book is going.
