The Mirror: Shattered Midnight is the second novel in the innovative four-book fairy-tale series written by Julie C. Dao, Dhonielle Clayton, J.C. Cervantes, and L. L. McKinney, following one family over several generations, and the curse that plagues it.
Zora Broussard has arrived in New Orleans with not much more than a bag of
clothes, a beautiful voice, and a pair of enchanted red shoes. Running from a
tragic accident caused by her magic, Zora wants nothing more than to blend in,
as well as to avoid her overbearing aunt and mean-spirited cousins. Music
becomes Zora’s only means of escape, yet she wonders if she should give it all
up to remove the powers that make her a target, especially as a Black woman in
the South.
But when Zora gets the chance to perform in a prominent jazz club, she meets a
sweet white pianist named Phillip with magic of his own, including a strange
mirror that foretells their future together. Falling into a forbidden love,
Zora and Phillip must keep their relationship a secret. And soon the two
discover the complicated connection between their respective families, a
connection that could lead to catastrophe for them both. In the era of
segregation and speakeasies, Zora must change her destiny and fight for the one
she loves . . . or risk losing everything.
My Review 🌕🌕🌕🌕🌑 I did not read the first book in the series, but after reading this book I will be going back to read Broken Wish. However, this book wasn't confusing without the first just has me intrigued. We follow Zora who is sent to live with her aunt in New Orleans after a horrible accident involving her magic. Hey aunt is a bit harsh and her cousins are pretty much jerks. Her only outlet is music. She gets a chance to play at a jazz club she meets Phillip, a very nice white boy. Phillip has a mirror that tells them of their future together, but being different races in the south they have to keep their relationship a secret. I thought this book depicted the time era (1920s) spot on. The racial discrimination and forbidden love between Zora & Phillip. I also thought that Clayton did New Orleans justice – you felt as if you were there eating gumbo, the sounds and smells were just there. Very atmospheric. The pacing was steady, there wasn't a moment I wanted to put the book down. The plot was fun and intriguing. The characters were so loveable and relatable for that time era. Overall I thought it was a wonderful read and will be reading the first book, as well as the next two! Huge thanks to Rock Star Book Tours & Disney Books for my gifted copy in exchange for my honest review. All my opinions are my own.
