From a beloved fantasy author comes this fresh feminist retelling of Sleeping Beauty about one girl destined for greatness—and the powerful sister ready to protect her by any means necessary.

Miriam may be the daughter of Queen Alethia of Tirendell, but she’s not a princess. She’s the child of Alethia and her previous husband, the King’s Champion, who died fighting for the king, and she has no ambitions to rule. When her new baby sister Aurora, heir to the throne, is born, she’s ecstatic. She adores the baby, who seems perfect in every way. But on the day of Aurora’s christening, an uninvited Dark Fae arrives, prepared to curse her, and Miriam discovers she possesses impossible power.

Soon, Miriam is charged with being trained in both magic and combat to act as chief protector to her sister. But shadowy threats are moving closer and closer to their kingdom, and Miriam’s dark power may not be enough to save everyone she loves, let alone herself.

Praise For Briarheart:

“Lackey (the Valdemar series) immerses her epic fantasy in medieval verisimilitude, balancing fantastical elements such as talking animals and feuding fairies with the everyday details of baking and architecture.”- Publishers Weekly

My Review

Rating: 4 out of 5.

Who doesn’t love a good retelling? I know over this past year I’ve come to adore some of them. Briarheart by Mercedes Lackey is a YA Sleeping Beauty retelling, however, reads more like Middle Grade to me. That being said, I’m a huge fan of Middle Grade.

Miriam’s father was the Kings Knight and his best friend. However, he was killed and Miriam’s mother married the King. When the King and Queen have a new baby, Aurora, Miriam couldn’t have been happier. She adores her little sister. At Auroras christening everything was going perfect until a mysterious dark fae arrived. As the dark fae was about to curse baby Aurora, Miriam jumped in front of the dark fae so that she might be cursed instead. Through sheer will, when Miriam puts her hands out to tell the dark fae to stop something crazy happens – she blocks the dark faes magic and somehow turns it back to the dark fae killing her. The light fae are shocked to learn that Miriam must have fae blood – her dad must have been a fae without anyone knowing. Knowing that the dark fae will end up showing up in the future to try to curse Aurora again, Miriam must be trained to protect her. The King asks for volunteers to join Miriam in her fight – creating a new team, Auroras Companions. Will this team be able to stand against the dark fae when they come calling??

Briarheart is a wonderfully written story with steady pacing. I like how the author changed the story, adding a brand new dynamic to it. The characters are all well described. The detail she gives about the fae is extremely well done. There’s a small amount of politics woven into the plot by way of the fae rules and how they must be followed. Miriam and her friends are early teens but act a bit younger to me. Overall, I thought it was a fun and easy read. If you like a good retelling this one is definitely worth checking out.

Huge thanks to Rock Star Book Tours and Little Brown Books for Young Readers for my gifted copy in exchange for my honest review. All statements made above are my own opinions.
