ARCHIBALD LOX — FAVOURITE CHARACTERS

I never know much about my characters when I begin a book or series. They grow out of the story-telling process. For instance, when I started Cirque Du Freak, I didn’t know if Mr Crepsley was going to be a hero or a villain until I wrote the third book!

The central characters in Archibald Lox are Archie, Inez, Cal and Winston, who appear in all three volumes, and who’ll play crucial roles in each of them. I won’t focus on those four here, since we’ll come to know loads about them through the books. Instead I’ve chosen a few of my faves from the support cast.

First up is Pitina, a cold, stern queen, but one with a very human heart. She has small but important roles to play in each of the volumes, and although we don’t get to see much of her over the course of the series, we learn a lot about her regardless. She’s been a reminder to me of just how much you can get out of a strong character, even if you don’t give them very much page time.

We meet Kojo for the first time in book 4, and readers who got their hands on advance copies of the book have already singled him out for praise in their reviews. Although he looks like any other teenager, he’s the oldest person in the Merge, by many thousands of years. He’s spent much of his time on his own in a confined room, and a good chunk of that in complete darkness. Most people would have crumbled long ago if they’d had to endure what Kojo has endured, but the shy boy has continued to smile through it all, a symbol of how resilient we can be.

We also meet Julia Vox for the first time in book 4. Grop is the sport of choice in the Merge, a mixture of American Football and mixed martial arts. The events of volume 2 are set around a Tourney, which is basically a world cup of grop. They don’t have modern technology in the Merge, so I wondered how commentators would make themselves heard over the roars of the crowd. Julia Vox turned out to be my answer, a ludicrously large-lunged lady whose voice is so loud that she ONLY SPEAKS IN CAPITAL LETTERS!

I have a habit of naming characters after people that I know. (I guess it all started when I decided to name the main character in Cirque Du Freak after myself!) That continues through the Archibald Lox series, but two that deserve special mention pop up in volume 2, and are named after my children, Dante and Gaia. I decided to give them a royal makeover, so Dante is a young prince, while Gaia is a queen. But before you accuse me of being a soft, sentimental, nepotistical wet hankie of a father, I should point out that Queen Gaia is a cunning, Machiavellan villain who cavorts with killers and might very well prove more of a match for Archie and his merry band of do-gooders!

Finally, Baba Jen provides the first couple of volumes with some of their lighter moments. She’s a grumpy, foul-mouthed, six hundred year old woman trapped in the body of a little girl, a tiny terror who strikes fear into the hearts of men and women three times her size. I named her after my harsh taskmaster of a publicist, Jennifer, who is always bullying me into working harder to promote my books by writing articles like this one!
