Hardcover – Paperback – Kindle
In this reassuring and educational picture book, Anabel relates to readers about learning how to deal with the emotions and uncertainties of having invisible disorders. She then teaches safe and healthy ways to handle and live with disorders.
Meet Anabel. She is different. Can you see Anabel’s difference? That’s because it’s invisible!
Anabel is learning that her difference makes her special. She is learning what her limitations are, and when to ask for help. She wants you to learn with her.
Her motto will help other children with invisible disorders understand that they get to choose what kind of person they are!
“I need to learn what my body can and can’t do. I need to stay away from things that make me feel bad…Only I get to choose who I am! Not my invisible disorder…I am strong. I am a good friend. I like to have fun. I like to play. Being different on the inside doesn’t change any of that.”
I love the awareness this book brings to children. Whether they are like Anabelle with hidden differences or someone without, this shows how to handle or maybe understand yourself or someone else better. Maybe you have a friend that gets sad a lot and don’t understand why – now you know they may have a hidden differences. This can help a child with hidden differences realize that they their differences make them special!! I think this book should be in the hands of every child, parents and in schools. I think this could really help others understand. Super cute illustrations bring the story together beautifully. Check it out!
About The Author
Rylee is an advocate, a service dog handler, and children’s book author of Helping Paws: A Day in the Life of a Service Dog and My Hidden Difference Makes Me Special. In her late twenties, Rylee was diagnosed with a rare disorder: hypokalemic periodic paralysis. She applies that to her background in Applied Behavior Analysis (ABA) and her M.Ed. in Instruction and Curriculum to focus on providing well rounded resources to children with medical disorders. She writes books for kids like her. Her books show children, children with medical conditions, disorders, and service dogs, they are not alone.
She knows her stories will help empower people to advocate for themselves and others affected by invisible disorders and disabilities by teaching healthy and safe options to deal with the struggles that come with having these disorders. She firmly believes that with your support, we can get these books into the hands of children who need them, at home, in classrooms, for educators, and medical practices. Together we can educate, inform, encourage, and be a resource to children and their support systems.
