My Review

What an awesome book!! I cannot get enough kids books that teach mindfulness and mantras! They are such a great learning tool. This book shows ideas of how to overcome different situations by “handling” them differently. Some of the ideas had be laughing out loud. I really liked the page in the back that your child can fill out with their name and picture.

Overall it was a very quick read filled with humor, great illustrations and helpful coping methods in the form of mantras!

Author Interview

Where do you get inspiration for your stories?

I have three kids and nieces and nephews, in addition to all my students over the years. There is a load of inspiration all around me. One of my favorite stories from a nephew was about pressing the elevator buttons. I heard about how he’d had a meltdown after not getting to press the button and knew it had to go into a book!

There are many books out there about helping kids deal with worries and anxiety. What makes yours different?

It’s different because it actually works, and doesn’t come off as preachy. Kids enjoy the amusing illustrations and the outrageous possibilities of how they ‘could’ handle their problems. It all rings true for them, because they’ve had the same thoughts so often themselves. Frequently after reading it just once kids start to say the words, ‘I can handle it’, meaning they are realizing they CAN handle it!

What advice would you give budding writers?

To GO for it! The publishing landscape has evolved tremendously over the past ten years. All the barriers to getting published have disappeared and there’s no reason not to write and publish a book.

In your book there is a page encouraging children to draw themselves, how did that come about?

To be completely honest, my husband suggested that! Initially, I was against it. I’m a rule follower and you shouldn’t draw or write in books! BUT after I thought about a while, it seemed like a really good idea to help cement the idea into a child’s head ‘they ARE able to handle anything!’.

Where do you write?

My office is my mudroom, but I also love to carry my laptop around the house and write on the couchees or rocking chair.

Do you write every day?

I do, but not books.  I also work as a freelance email marketer so I write emails all.day.long.
